Task-independent knowledge for improving the explanation capability of knowledge-based systems

Summary

The explanations given by present knowledge-based systems are of inferior quality. Three aspects seem to be responsible for that: The explanation component does not include the necessary factual knowledge; the explanation component is not able to choose the information that is relevant to the user and cannot deliver clear explanations. The task-independent, user-specific knowledge seems to be a possibility of improving the explanation capability. The information an explanation should contain is determined by the user groups, their knowledge, their capabilities et cetera.

In this paper the task-independent knowledge, necessary for providing user-friendly explanations will be determined. The first Chapter gives a survey of knoweldge-based systems' present explanation capabilities. In Chapter 2 we examine the user requirements to be met by explanations. Chapter 3 describes the necessary task-independent knowledge. In the fourth Chapter we will illustrate our results at an example.
